South Korea Transportation Card Guide: Easily Explore Seoul and Other Areas

Published 2025.11.17

Welcome to Korea! For every visitor, a convenient transportation card is an essential tool for your independent travel in Korea. With it, you can easily ride the subway, buses, and even make purchases at convenience stores. In Korea, the most common transportation card is the T-money card.

❤️Buying a T-money Card: Where to Buy?

✅Convenience Stores (Most Recommended)

This is the most convenient and recommended place to buy one. You can find them at the following chain convenience stores:

• GS25

• CU

• 7-Eleven

• e-mart24

Simply walk into any convenience store, go to the cashier, and tell the clerk you want to buy a T-money card (티머니 카드).

• The card itself requires payment: It usually costs around 3,000 won (only for card production).

• Instant Top-up: Please top up your card immediately after purchase. Tell the clerk the amount you wish to top up, for example, 10,000 Korean Won, and pay in Korean Won cash.

✅ Subway Stations

You can also purchase and top up your card at subway stations:

• Self-service machines: Many subway stations have self-service machines offering interfaces in multiple languages, including Chinese.

• Customer Service Centers: You can also purchase cards at the customer service centers (service windows) within subway stations.

✅ Airports

Upon arrival at Incheon or Gimpo Airport, you can purchase cards directly at convenience stores within the airport.

☀️Top-up and Usage Tips

Topping up your T-money card is very convenient and can be done at any convenience store or subway station self-service machine. Remember, top-ups usually only accept Korean Won cash.

How to Use?

1. Swipe your card when boarding and alighting: Whether taking the subway or bus, swipe your card when boarding and alighting. This is a crucial step in recording your travel route and enjoying transfer discounts.

2. Transfer Discounts: Using the T-money card to transfer between subways and buses within designated times offers transfer discounts, making it much more cost-effective than purchasing single tickets.

3. Payment Functions: The T-money card isn't just for transportation; it can also be used to pay small amounts at many convenience stores, some taxis, and snack stalls.

✨ Other Card Options

For an even more convenient payment experience, consider the WOWPASS card.

WOWPASS Card

• Features: This is a multi-functional prepaid card designed specifically for foreign tourists. It combines the transportation functions of T-money with the functionality of a prepaid debit card.

• Advantages: You can exchange foreign currencies (such as USD or RMB) for Korean Won at self-service machines in airports or major subway stations and deposit the money directly into the card for shopping. The card also includes T-money functionality for convenient public transportation.

↩️ End of Trip: How to return the card?

When your trip to Korea is coming to an end, you can withdraw the remaining balance on your card:

• Refund Location: You can process your refund at customer service centers in convenience stores or subway stations.

• Refund Instructions:

• The remaining balance on your card can be refunded (if the balance exceeds a certain amount, you may need to go to a service center).

• The card's processing fee (approximately 3,000 KRW) is usually non-refundable.

We hope this little transportation card will make your trip to Korea smoother and more enjoyable!
